His thirst is the same as our thirst. His water should be free of any harmful substances--whether he's a squirrel or a rat or a pigeon or a human child. We have a responsibility to keep their food and water clean.

The more we understand how all the little bits of Nature are connected the better we will realize how much we've detached ourselves from that beautiful system.
