Green Chimneys Hawk, 2003

This baby red tail hawk was rescued in Prospect Park and treated at The Animal Medical center in Manhattan for Frounce Disease*. It is now in the care of Paul Kupchok in Green Chimneys Brewster, NY. The bird has made a remarkable recovery under Paul's wonderful care and will be ready for release soon.

*Frounce or Trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas gallinae, a single-celled, pear-shaped protozoan harbored by most doves and pigeons. It is a parasite of the upper digestive tract of many avian species causing accumulation of necrotic material in the mouth and esophagus. It is principally a disease of young birds and is often fatal. The infected pigeons often will not show any clinical signs of the disease.
